Israel approves booster shot approval for people over 40

Israel offers a third booster shot against COVID-19 to people over 40 in an effort to stop the rise of the delta variant.

Prime Minister Naftali Benjaminnet, 49, received his jab on Friday. Israel was the first country to offer booster shots last month. However, the United States has not yet made boosters available for older Americans.

Nearly 5.9 Million Israelis have taken at least one dose. More than 5.4 Million have taken two doses, and more than 1.3million have taken a third.

After a long summer of reopening, the number of infections has continued to rise which has prompted new restrictions by government on gatherings. According to government statistics, Friday's rate of coronavirus testing was 5.5%.
